Kunisaki Heritage Bike and Hike Itinerary

5 day 5 night tour

Concise itinerary. Distance is for bike ride. Hike is in hours.

Day 1: From Start point to Yamaga town.

Ride to Tsuwadou trail-head depending on start-point, up to 10 mile ride, hike 4 to 5 hours on loop trail. Stay at B&B Kiora Cotttage in Yamaga town.

Day 2: Yamaga to You-jo Ya Farmstay in Bungo Taketa town.

Ride to Kumano Mugaibutsu gaint stone images, 10 miles. Hike the Noko Giri “Saw-tooth ridge” trail, then ride 5 miles to You jo Ya accommodations.

Day 3: Bungo Taketa to Sato Gallery, Imi town.

Ride to Nakayama Senkyo trail, 5 miles, hike this fantastic trail, and then ride on to accommodations at Sato Gallery, another 11 miles.

Day 4: Imi town to Monjusenji Temple.

Ride around mountain (or hike directly) from Sato's Gallery to Monjusenji Temple. Option to take ferry boat to Himeshima island. Accommodations are at 300 year old temple in the mountains.

16 mile bike or 6 mile forest hike.

Day 5: Monjusenji Temple back to Civilization.

Morning hike on Monju mountain (4 miles), then bike ride to starting point (18 miles), via Futagoji Temple. We will return to our support car and accommodation is in Ryokan, in Beppu city.

Notes on The Kunisaki Heritage tour

Seasonal conditions and booking availability may cause changes in accommodations or itinerary organization. The order of days events may be changed to suit member travel plans and availability of accommodations. Weather may also influence daily events, as some hike trial are not suitable for travel during heavy rain or winds, because of the danger of falling.

For those flying from abroad, the start point of this adventure is either Beppu town, The Oita international airport, or the train station in Usa town, on the rail line between Fukuoka and Oita city.

There is express train service from Hakata station to Usa, which takes approximately one hour.

Plan to meet the group in Usa before 10 AM on Day 1.

In some cases this may necessitate staying overnight in accommodations close to Usa, such as Beppu city. We can assist you in making reservations.
