This is a typical itinerary for the Kunisaki Hike. This walking tour is available to anyone, and is not listed in the schedule because it can be arranged for any time. Please give me at least one month advanced warning to make reservations for your hike.

Day 1: Start in Usa town. First we hike "Tsuwadou Mountain Trail," a pilgrimage route near the large shrine at Usa. It is a 5-6 hours hike studded with tiny statues. Later, we visit Usa shrine, studded with larger statues. Hot spring at Kaze no Sato, and accommodations at Kiora Cottage, a touch of New Zealand in rural Japan.

Day 2; Drive to Kumano Mugaibutsu and hike Nokogiri trail, very tough 3-4 hours. We have a lunch, and hike to Fukinoto, an upscale hot spring resort. This is an easy road walk, about 3 hours. Accommodations at Fukinoto include dinner and breakfast, with organic Japanese foods and famous hot springs.

Day 3; Transfer to the start of the Nakayama-senkyo trail, a spectacular path on a high rocky ridge, then trek along the forest paths to Imi town. Approx. 8 hours hiking. Accommodations are at Sato's Gallery Hanna, with ofuro bath and memorable dinner.

Day 4; After a restful morning stroll on the island of Himeshima, prepare for a hike through the Sentou-ji temple ruins! Lunch at the shrine looking over the inland sea, then a 3 hour forest trek past Iwa-tou-ji temple, to Monjusen-Ji Temple. This is an easy day. Accommodations are at Monju Temple, in traditional Buddhists fashion; wood-fired bath and “temple-fare” vegetarian dinner.

Day 5; Trek to Futagoji Temple, about 4 to 6 hours, depending on the route we choose. If the weather is good, we will climb to the peak. Afterwards we return to Beppu city for accommodation at Nogami Honkan, hot spring bath and dinner at a traditional Izakaiya. Guests who fly from Oita Airport may want to stay closer to the airport, and that can be arranged.

This hike tour is available from Japan Bike and Hike all-year round but note that winter months of December, January and February can be cold and may have snow. However, we are certainly available to take you out in these "more adventurous months!"
