This is a typical itinerary for the Kunisaki hike, but could change due to start location and accommodation availability.

Day 1: Start in Usa town, Beppu city or from the Oita International airport, depending on guest's travel arrangements. Transportation to Yamaga town, and hike Tsuwadou trail, a pilgrimage route used by acolytes from the large shrine at Usa.. 5-6 hours hike. Later, hot spring at Kaze no Sato and accommodations at Kiora Cottage, B&B.

Day 2; Transfer to Futago Temple and hike part of the Kunisaki Trail system, as far as Tennenji Temple. This is an easy forest-and-road walk, about 6-7 hours hike. Accommodations at You-jo Ya, a traditional Japanese Farmhouse and acoustic music venue. Hot spring is near Matama-village.

Day 3; Transfer to start of the Nakayama-sentou trail, a spectacular path on a high rirocky ridge, then trek along the forest path to Imi town. Approx. 8 hours hiking. Accommodation is at Sato's Gallery, carver of Buddha statues. Hot spring is available at Akane no Sato.

Day 4; Hike to Sentou-ji temple ruins, then the forest path past Iwa-tou-ji temple, to end the day at Monjusen-Ji Temple. About 5 hours hike. Alternately, we may take a ferry-ride to Himeshima island for some cultural and historical observations. Accommodations are at Monju Temple, in traditional Buddhists fashion, wood-fired bath and “temple-fare” dinner.

Day 5; Trek to Futagoji Temple, about 4 to 6 hours, depending on the route we choose. Afterwards we return to Beppu town for accommodation at Nogami Honkan, hot spring bath and to the train station for the train home.

This hike tour is available all-year round but note that winter months of December, January and February can be cold and summer months of June July and August can be hot and/or rainy. However, we are certainly available to take you out in these "more adventerous months!"
