This is a tour completely different from the adventures we normally offer in Japan.

It is different from anything available in Japan today.

Come for one day, ten days or a life-time.

OK, not a life-time.

Generally speaking, this is an arts and cultural tour, but it is hands-on.
The two main classes are carving and pottery, but you may do so much more!
There are arts with paper, materials, Ink and Caligraphy, Karate, cooking and traditional skills of various sorts. There is no obligation to join, and not everyone could do all these things. We do try to concentrate on carving and pottery.

The actual time you spend doing these things is generally up to you, but creating takes time. Please understand a stone carving may require 3 hours a day of fairly hard work. Wood carving goes faster and is lighter, if your final work is to be crated and shipped to you. (shipping costs not included in basic tour package) Some guests put their creation on permanent display at the Sentoji ruins park in Kunisaki.
Usualy it takes about 7 days to carve a reasonably respectable statue.

Pottery vacations are traditionally longer, from two weeks to one month, because pottery takes longer to create. However, stays from 1 day to three months are available. It depends on your life-schedule.

There are daily events that range from wilderness hikes, bike rides, over-nights at a temple, local exploration and meditation to fishing, canoeing and more. You may do as little or as much as you like. Some people find the outdoor exploration suits them while their spouse is happy to create indoors.

Internet service is available.

There is a hot spring villa nearby, and shopping a short bike-ride away. (bikes provided) You will have an english-speaking hosts and guides but this is a great environment to brush up on your Japanese language skills.
There is transpotration available at any time, and we are flexible with schedules. You may arrive, stay a few days to make some pottery, then travel while your work dries, return to glaze and fire, or leave family members in the comfort and safety of the compound while you do business in the city. You may choose to base an entire Japan vacation from Kunisaki.

For school groups, we can arrange for accommodations at the Kunisaki Youth Hostel, for greater savings. We are happy to accept young people's cultural adventure groups.

Unlike many tours, this isn't a whirlwind of cities, temples and hotels. You unpack and stay at here, in the comfort of Sato's grand Gallery and Guesthouse. You get to know a place in Japan, maybe well enough to call it your home, away from home.

"It is better to know one part (of Japan) well, than to know lots of it not at all."

The Kunisaki area has a superb variety of attractions, from beaches to pilgrimage trails that snake along razor-back ridges and through emeral forest paths, by-ways and resting temples.
There is much to explore by foot, bike or car, and also numerous local festvals.

In short, this area has everything, except big-city life.
Accommodations, equipment and meals are provided. Write for more details.

No special skills required.

Schedule is on-going. Join anytime, stay as long as you choose.
